How to Fix CVE-2018-1098

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Go.etcd.io/etcd/v3 dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

go.etcd.io/etcd/v3 fixed: 3.4.0
Upgrade go.etcd.io/etcd/v3 to 3.4.0
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for go.etcd.io/etcd/v3

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2018-1098, inspect your project dependencies for Go.etcd.io/etcd/v3:

inspect dependencies for go.etcd.io/etcd/v3

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Go.etcd.io/etcd/v3 in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 3.4.0), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-352: Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF), where the web application does not, or cannot, sufficiently verify whether a request was intentionally provided by the user who sent the request, which could have originated from an unauthorized actor. In Go.etcd.io/etcd/v3, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

A cross-site request forgery flaw was found in etcd 3.3.1 and earlier. An attacker can set up a website that tries to send a POST request to the etcd server and modify a key. Adding a key is done with PUT so it is theoretically safe (can't PUT from an HTML form or such) but POST allows creating in-order keys that an attacker can send.
