How to Fix CVE-2017-16615

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected MLAlchemy dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

MLAlchemy fixed: 0.2.2
pip install MLAlchemy>=0.2.2
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

pip show MLAlchemy

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2017-16615, inspect your installed packages using pip:

pip show MLAlchemy

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of MLAlchemy in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 0.2.2), your application is affected.

Note: The pip show MLAlchemy command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under General Security Weakness. In MLAlchemy, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

An exploitable vulnerability exists in the YAML parsing functionality in the parse_yaml_query method in parser.py in MLAlchemy before 0.2.2. When processing YAML-Based queries for data, a YAML parser can execute arbitrary Python commands resulting in command execution because load is used where safe_load should have been used. An attacker can insert Python into loaded YAML to trigger this vulnerability.
