How to Fix CVE-2014-9508

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Typo3/cms dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

typo3/cms fixed: 4.5.39
Upgrade typo3/cms to 4.5.39
typo3/cms fixed: 6.2.9
Upgrade typo3/cms to 6.2.9
typo3/cms fixed: 7.0.2
Upgrade typo3/cms to 7.0.2
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for typo3/cms

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2014-9508, inspect your project dependencies for Typo3/cms:

inspect dependencies for typo3/cms

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Typo3/cms in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 4.5.39), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-59: Improper Link Resolution Before File Access ('Link Following'), where the product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. In Typo3/cms, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

The frontend rendering component in TYPO3 4.5.x before 4.5.39, 4.6.x through 6.2.x before 6.2.9, and 7.x before 7.0.2, allows remote attackers to change URLs to arbitrary domains. An attacker could forge a request which modifies anchor only links on the homepage of a TYPO3 installation such that they point to arbitrary domains, if the configuration option `config.prefixLocalAnchors` is used with any possible value. TYPO3 versions 4.6.x and higher are only affected if the homepage is not a shortcut to a different page. As an additional pre-condition, URL rewriting must be enabled in the web server (which it typically is) when using extensions like realurl or cooluri. Installations where `config.absRefPrefix` is additionally set to any value are not affected by this vulnerability. Example of affected configuration: ```php config.absRefPrefix = config.prefixLocalAnchors = all page = PAGE page.10 = TEXT page.10.value = <a href="#skiplinks">Skiplinks</a> .htaccess: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-l RewriteRule .* index.php [L] ```
