How to Fix CVE-2022-31077

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected CloudCore CSI Driver dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge fixed: 1.10.1
Upgrade github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge to 1.10.1
github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge fixed: 1.9.3
Upgrade github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge to 1.9.3
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2022-31077, inspect your project dependencies for CloudCore CSI Driver:

inspect dependencies for github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of CloudCore CSI Driver in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 1.10.1), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-476: NULL Pointer Dereference, where the product dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid but is null. In CloudCore CSI Driver, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact A malicious message response from KubeEdge can crash the CSI Driver controller server by triggering a nil-pointer dereference panic. As a consequence, the CSI Driver controller will be in denial of service. An attacker would already need to be an authenticated user of the Cloud, and only when the authenticated user launches the `csidriver` then CloudCore may be attacked. ### Patches This bug has been fixed in Kubeedge 1.11.0, 1.10.1, and 1.9.3. Users should update to these versions to resolve the issue. ### Workarounds At the time of writing, no workaround exists. ### References NA ### Credits Thanks David Korczynski and Adam Korczynski of ADA Logics for responsibly disclosing this issue in accordance with the [kubeedge security policy](https://github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge/security/policy) during a security audit sponsored by CNCF and facilitated by OSTIF. ### For more information If you have any questions or comments about this advisory: * Open an issue in [KubeEdge repo](https://github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge/issues/new/choose) * To make a vulnerability report, email your vulnerability to the private [cncf-kubeedge-security@lists.cncf.io](mailto:cncf-kubeedge-security@lists.cncf.io) list with the security details and the details expected for [KubeEdge bug reports](https://github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge/blob/master/.github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/bug-report.md). **Notes:** This vulnerability was found by fuzzing KubeEdge by way of OSS-Fuzz.
