How to Fix CVE-2023-2801

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Github.com/grafana/grafana dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

github.com/grafana/grafana fixed: 9.4.12
Upgrade github.com/grafana/grafana to 9.4.12
github.com/grafana/grafana fixed: 9.5.3
Upgrade github.com/grafana/grafana to 9.5.3
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for github.com/grafana/grafana

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2023-2801, inspect your project dependencies for Github.com/grafana/grafana:

inspect dependencies for github.com/grafana/grafana

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Github.com/grafana/grafana in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 9.4.12), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-662: Improper Synchronization, where the product utilizes multiple threads, processes, components, or systems to allow temporary access to a shared resource that can only be exclusive to one process at a time, but it does not properly synchronize these actions, which might cause simultaneous accesses of this resource by multiple threads or processes. In Github.com/grafana/grafana, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

Grafana is an open-source platform for monitoring and observability. Using public dashboards users can query multiple distinct data sources using mixed queries. However such query has a possibility of crashing a Grafana instance. The only feature that uses mixed queries at the moment is public dashboards, but it's also possible to cause this by calling the query API directly. This might enable malicious users to crash Grafana instances through that endpoint. Users may upgrade to version 9.4.12 and 9.5.3 to receive a fix.
