How to Fix CVE-2021-28032

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Nano arena dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

nano_arena fixed: 0.5.2
Upgrade nano_arena to 0.5.2
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for nano_arena

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2021-28032, inspect your project dependencies for Nano arena:

inspect dependencies for nano_arena

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Nano arena in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 0.5.2), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-416: Use After Free, where the product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. at some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer. In Nano arena, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

Affected versions of this crate assumed that Borrow<Idx> was guaranteed to return the same value on .borrow(). The borrowed index value was used to retrieve a mutable reference to a value. If the Borrow<Idx> implementation returned a different index, the split arena would allow retrieving the index as a mutable reference creating two mutable references to the same element. This violates Rust's aliasing rules and allows for memory safety issues such as writing out of bounds and use-after-frees. The flaw was corrected in commit `6b83f9d` by storing the .borrow() value in a temporary variable.
