How to Fix CVE-2022-2048

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Http2 server dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

org.eclipse.jetty.http2:http2-server fixed: 9.4.47
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.eclipse.jetty.http2</groupId>
    <artifactId>http2-server</artifactId>
    <version>9.4.47</version>
</dependency>
org.eclipse.jetty.http2:http2-server fixed: 10.0.10
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.eclipse.jetty.http2</groupId>
    <artifactId>http2-server</artifactId>
    <version>10.0.10</version>
</dependency>
org.eclipse.jetty.http2:http2-server fixed: 11.0.10
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.eclipse.jetty.http2</groupId>
    <artifactId>http2-server</artifactId>
    <version>11.0.10</version>
</dependency>
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.eclipse.jetty.http2

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Java application is affected by CVE-2022-2048, inspect your build dependencies using the Maven Dependency Plugin:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.eclipse.jetty.http2

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Http2 server in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 9.4.47), your application is affected.

Note: The mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.eclipse.jetty.http2 command inspects the resolved dependency graph declared in your project's POM files; it does not perform automated security scanning or inspect runtime dynamic classpaths. Always verify runtime container classpaths and shaded JARs.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-400: Uncontrolled Resource Consumption, where the product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource. In Http2 server, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Description Invalid HTTP/2 requests (for example, invalid URIs) are incorrectly handled by writing a blocking error response directly from the selector thread. If the client manages to exhaust the HTTP/2 flow control window, or TCP congest the connection, the selector thread will be blocked trying to write the error response. If this is repeated for all the selector threads, the server becomes unresponsive, causing the denial of service. ### Impact A malicious client may render the server unresponsive. ### Patches The fix is available in Jetty versions 9.4.47. 10.0.10, 11.0.10. ### Workarounds No workaround available within Jetty itself. One possible workaround is to filter the requests before sending them to Jetty (for example in a proxy) ### For more information If you have any questions or comments about this advisory: * Email us at security@webtide.com.
