How to Fix CVE-2025-23217

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Mitmproxy dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

mitmproxy fixed: 11.1.2
pip install mitmproxy>=11.1.2
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

pip show mitmproxy

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2025-23217, inspect your installed packages using pip:

pip show mitmproxy

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Mitmproxy in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 11.1.2), your application is affected.

Note: The pip show mitmproxy command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-441: Unintended Proxy or Intermediary ('Confused Deputy'), where the product receives a request, message, or directive from an upstream component, but the product does not sufficiently preserve the original source of the request before forwarding the request to an external actor that is outside of the product's control sphere. this causes the product to appear to be the source of the request, leading it to act as a proxy or other intermediary between the upstream component and the external actor. In Mitmproxy, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact In mitmweb 11.1.0 and below, a malicious client can use mitmweb's proxy server (bound to `*:8080` by default) to access mitmweb's internal API (bound to `127.0.0.1:8081` by default). In other words, while the client cannot access the API directly (good), they can access the API through the proxy (bad). An attacker may be able to escalate this [SSRF](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server-side_request_forgery)-style access to remote code execution. The mitmproxy and mitmdump tools are unaffected. Only mitmweb is affected. The `block_global` option, which is enabled by default, blocks connections originating from publicly-routable IP addresses in the proxy. The attacker needs to be in the same local network. ### Patches The vulnerability has been fixed in mitmproxy 11.1.2 and above. ### Acknowledgements We thank Stefan Grönke (@gronke) for reporting this vulnerability as part of a security audit by [Radically Open Security](https://www.radicallyopensecurity.com/). This audit was supported by the [NGI0 Entrust fund](https://nlnet.nl/entrust/) established by [NLnet](https://nlnet.nl/). ### Timeline - **2025-01-14**: Received initial report. - **2025-01-14**: Verified report and confirmed receipt. - **2025-01-19**: Shared patch with researcher. - **2025-02-04**: Received final confirmation that patch is working. - **2025-02-05**: Published patched release and advisory.
