How to Fix CVE-2022-31008

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Rabbit common dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

rabbit_common fixed: 3.10.2
Upgrade rabbit_common to 3.10.2
rabbit_common fixed: 3.9.18
Upgrade rabbit_common to 3.9.18
rabbit_common fixed: 3.8.32
Upgrade rabbit_common to 3.8.32
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for rabbit_common

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2022-31008, inspect your project dependencies for Rabbit common:

inspect dependencies for rabbit_common

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Rabbit common in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 3.10.2), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-330: Use of Insufficiently Random Values, where the product uses insufficiently random numbers or values in a security context that depends on unpredictable numbers. In Rabbit common, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact Shovel and Federation plugins perform URI obfuscation in their worker (link) state. The encryption key used to encrypt the URI was seeded with a predictable secret. This means that in case of certain exceptions related to Shovel and Federation plugins, reasonably easily deobfuscatable data could appear in the node log. Patched versions correctly use a cluster-wide secret for that purpose. ### Patches Patched versions: * `3.10.2` * `3.9.18` * `3.8.32` ### Workarounds Disable Shovel and Federation plugins. ### Credits RabbitMQ core team would like to thank Lajos @luos Gerecs and Anh Nguyen from Erlang Solutions for responsibly disclosing and working with us on a patch for this vulnerability. ### For more information * [Mailing list](https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/rabbitmq-users) * [Community Slack](https://rabbitmq-slack.herokuapp.com/)
