How to Fix CVE-2024-31216

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Github.com/fluxcd/source controller dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

github.com/fluxcd/source-controller fixed: 1.2.5
Upgrade github.com/fluxcd/source-controller to 1.2.5
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for github.com/fluxcd/source-controller

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2024-31216, inspect your project dependencies for Github.com/fluxcd/source controller:

inspect dependencies for github.com/fluxcd/source-controller

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Github.com/fluxcd/source controller in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 1.2.5), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-532: Insertion of Sensitive Information into Log File, where the product writes sensitive information to a log file. In Github.com/fluxcd/source controller, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact When source-controller is configured to use an [Azure SAS token](https://v2-2.docs.fluxcd.io/flux/components/source/buckets/#azure-blob-sas-token-example) when connecting to Azure Blob Storage, the token was logged along with the Azure URL when the controller encountered a connection error. An attacker with access to the source-controller logs could use the token to gain access to the Azure Blob Storage until the token expires. ### Patches This vulnerability was fixed in source-controller **v1.2.5**. ### Workarounds There is no workaround for this vulnerability except for using a different auth mechanism such as [Azure Workload Identity](https://v2-2.docs.fluxcd.io/flux/components/source/buckets/#azure). ### Credits This issue was reported and fixed by Jagpreet Singh Tamber (@jagpreetstamber) from the Azure Arc team. ### References https://github.com/fluxcd/source-controller/pull/1430 ### For more information If you have any questions or comments about this advisory: - Open an issue in the source-controller repository. - Contact us at the CNCF Flux Channel.
