How to Fix CVE-2018-11047

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Cloudfoundry identity server dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

org.cloudfoundry.identity:cloudfoundry-identity-server fixed: 4.5.7
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.cloudfoundry.identity</groupId>
    <artifactId>cloudfoundry-identity-server</artifactId>

Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.cloudfoundry.identity

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Java application is affected by CVE-2018-11047, inspect your build dependencies using the Maven Dependency Plugin:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.cloudfoundry.identity

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Cloudfoundry identity server in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 4.5.7), your application is affected.

Note: The mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.cloudfoundry.identity command inspects the resolved dependency graph declared in your project's POM files; it does not perform automated security scanning or inspect runtime dynamic classpaths. Always verify runtime container classpaths and shaded JARs.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-863: Incorrect Authorization, where the product performs an authorization check when an actor attempts to access a resource or perform an action, but it does not correctly perform the check. In Cloudfoundry identity server, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

Cloud Foundry UAA, versions 4.19 prior to 4.19.2 and 4.12 prior to 4.12.4 and 4.10 prior to 4.10.2 and 4.7 prior to 4.7.6 and 4.5 prior to 4.5.7, incorrectly authorizes requests to admin endpoints by accepting a valid refresh token in lieu of an access token. Refresh tokens by design have a longer expiration time than access tokens, allowing the possessor of a refresh token to authenticate longer than expected. This affects the administrative endpoints of the UAA. i.e. /Users, /Groups, etc. However, if the user has been deleted or had groups removed, or the client was deleted, the refresh token will no longer be valid.
