How to Fix CVE-2026-7768

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected @fastify/accepts serializer dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

@fastify/accepts-serializer fixed: 6.0.4
npm install @fastify/accepts-serializer@6.0.4
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

npm ls @fastify/accepts-serializer

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Node.js application is affected by CVE-2026-7768, inspect your project dependencies using npm:

npm ls @fastify/accepts-serializer

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of @fastify/accepts serializer in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 6.0.4), your application is affected.

Note: The npm ls @fastify/accepts-serializer command inspects dependencies declared in your package.json and lockfile; it does not perform automated runtime dynamic scanning.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-770: Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling, where the product allocates a reusable resource or group of resources on behalf of an actor without imposing any intended restrictions on the size or number of resources that can be allocated. In @fastify/accepts serializer, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact `@fastify/accepts-serializer` cached serializer-selection results keyed by the request `Accept` header without a size limit or eviction policy. A remote unauthenticated client could send many distinct but matching `Accept` header variants to make the cache grow unbounded. Under sustained load, this can exhaust the Node.js heap and crash the process. ### Patches Update to `@fastify/accepts-serializer >= 6.0.4`. The cache is now bounded by an LRU with a default size of 100 entries, configurable via the new `cacheSize` plugin option. ### Workarounds None. Upgrade is required.
