How to Fix CVE-2025-48939

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Tarteaucitronjs dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

tarteaucitronjs fixed: 1.22.0
npm install tarteaucitronjs@1.22.0
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

npm ls tarteaucitronjs

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Node.js application is affected by CVE-2025-48939, inspect your project dependencies using npm:

npm ls tarteaucitronjs

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Tarteaucitronjs in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 1.22.0), your application is affected.

Note: The npm ls tarteaucitronjs command inspects dependencies declared in your package.json and lockfile; it does not perform automated runtime dynamic scanning.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-138: Improper Neutralization of Special Elements, where the product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could be interpreted as control elements or syntactic markers when they are sent to a downstream component. In Tarteaucitronjs, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

A vulnerability was identified in tarteaucitron.js where document.currentScript was accessed without verifying that it referenced an actual `<script>` element. If an attacker injected an HTML element such as: ``` <img name="currentScript" src="https://malicious.example.com"> ``` it could clobber the document.currentScript property. This causes the script to resolve incorrectly to an <img> element instead of the <script> tag, leading to unexpected behavior or failure to load the script path correctly. This issue arises because in some browser environments, named DOM elements (e.g., name="currentScript") become properties on the global document object. ## Impact An attacker with control over the HTML could exploit this to change the CDN domain of tarteaucitron. ## Fix https://github.com/AmauriC/tarteaucitron.js/commit/230a3b69d363837acfa895823d841e0608826ba3 The issue was resolved by verifying that document.currentScript is an instance of HTMLScriptElement. If not, the script now falls back safely to the last <script> tag on the page.
