How to Fix CVE-2026-77401

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected AccessControl dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

AccessControl fixed: 7.4
pip install AccessControl>=7.4
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

pip show AccessControl

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2026-77401, inspect your installed packages using pip:

pip show AccessControl

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of AccessControl in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 7.4), your application is affected.

Note: The pip show AccessControl command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-693: Protection Mechanism Failure, where the product does not use or incorrectly uses a protection mechanism that provides sufficient defense against directed attacks against the product. In AccessControl, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact Python's string `format` functionality allows someone controlling the format string to "read" objects accessible (recursively) via attribute access and subscription from accessible objects. Those attribute accesses and subscriptions use Python's full blown `getattr` and `getitem`, not the policy restricted `AccessControl` variants `_getattr_` and `_getitem_`. This can lead to critical information disclosure. The `AccessControl` package already guards against direct access to the formatting functions on string instances, but these mitigations did not cover subclasses of `str`. Affected are all users who allow untrusted users to create AccessControl controlled Python code and execute it. ### Patches A fix was published with version 7.4. ### Workarounds There is no workaround.
