How to Fix CVE-2021-32839

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Sqlparse dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

sqlparse fixed: 0.4.2
pip install sqlparse>=0.4.2
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

pip show sqlparse

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2021-32839, inspect your installed packages using pip:

pip show sqlparse

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Sqlparse in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 0.4.2), your application is affected.

Note: The pip show sqlparse command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-400: Uncontrolled Resource Consumption, where the product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource. In Sqlparse, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact The formatter function that strips comments from a SQL contains a regular expression that is vulnerable to [ReDoS](https://owasp.org/www-community/attacks/Regular_expression_Denial_of_Service_-_ReDoS) (Regular Expression Denial of Service). The regular expression may cause exponential backtracking on strings containing many repetitions of '\r\n' in SQL comments. ### Patches The issues has been fixed in sqlparse 0.4.2. ### Workarounds Only the formatting feature that removes comments from SQL statements is affected by this regular expression. As a workaround don't use the `sqlformat.format` function with keyword `strip_comments=True` or the `--strip-comments` command line flag when using the `sqlformat` command line tool. ### References This issue was discovered by GitHub team members @erik-krogh and @yoff. It was found using a [CodeQL](https://codeql.github.com/) query which identifies inefficient regular expressions. You can see the results of the query on python-sqlparse by following [this link](https://lgtm.com/query/2223658096471222354/). ### For more information If you have any questions or comments about this advisory: * Open an issue in [sqlparse issue tracker](https://github.com/andialbrecht/sqlparse/issues) * Email us at [albrecht.andi@gmail.com](mailto:albrecht.andi@gmail.com)
