CVE-2024-40637: Dbt core Dbt Has An Implicit Override Vulnerability
LOWCVE-2024-40637 is a LOW (CVSS 4.2) dbt has an implicit override vulnerability (CWE-89: Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an SQL Command ('SQL Injection')) affecting Dbt core libraries in the PyPI ecosystem. The issue involves dbt has an implicit override for built-in materializations from installed packages. Remediation is available by upgrading affected packages to version 1.6.14, 1.7.14.

How to Fix CVE-2024-40637
To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Dbt core dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.
pip install dbt-core>=1.6.14
pip install dbt-core>=1.7.14
Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:
pip show dbt-core
How to Check if You Are Affected
To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2024-40637, inspect your installed packages using pip:
pip show dbt-core
Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Dbt core in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 1.6.14), your application is affected.
Note: The pip show dbt-core command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.
Technical Details
Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis
This vulnerability is classified under CWE-89: Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an SQL Command ('SQL Injection'), where the product constructs all or part of an sql command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended sql command when it is sent to a downstream component. without sufficient removal or quoting of sql syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated sql query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as sql instead of ordinary user data. In Dbt core, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

"details" : "### Impact\n_What kind of vulnerability is it? Who is impacted?_\n\nWhen a user installs a [package](https://docs.getdbt.com/docs/build/packages) in dbt, it has the ability to override macros, materializations, and other core components of dbt. This is by design, as it allows packages to extend and customize dbt's functionality. However, this also means that a malicious package could potentially override these components with harmful code.\n\n### Patches\n_Has the problem been patched? What versions should users upgrade to?_\n\nFixed on 1.8.0, and patched for 1.6.14 and 1.7.14 releases.\n\n### Workarounds\n_Is there a way for users to fix or remediate the vulnerability without upgrading?_\n\nPreviously, a materialization defined in a package that shared a name with one of the built-in materializations would be preferred by default, without user action which is surprising and makes it more difficult to detect the insecure behaviour. We've changed the default behaviour to require explicit overrides by users in `1.8.0`, and provided the ability to opt-out of built-in materialization overrides in 1.6 and 1.7 via the `flags.require_explicit_package_overrides_for_builtin_materializations: False` configuration in `dbt_project.yml`\n\nVersions older than 1.6 are EOL.\n\n### References\n_Are there any links users can visit to find out more?_\n* dbt documentation: https://docs.getdbt.com/reference/global-configs/legacy-behaviors#behavior-change-flags\n* https://www.elementary-data.com/post/are-dbt-packages-secure-the-answer-lies-in-your-dwh-policies\n* https://www.equalexperts.com/blog/tech-focus/are-you-at-risk-from-this-critical-dbt-vulnerability/\n* https://tempered.works/posts/2024/07/06/preventing-data-theft-with-gcp-service-controls/",
