How to Fix CVE-2025-32974

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Xwiki platform security requiredrights default dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-security-requiredrights-default fixed: 15.10.8
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.xwiki.platform</groupId>
    <artifactId>xwiki-platform-security-requiredrights-default</artifactId>
    <version>15.10.8</version>
</dependency>
org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-security-requiredrights-default fixed: 16.2.0
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.xwiki.platform</groupId>
    <artifactId>xwiki-platform-security-requiredrights-default</artifactId>
    <version>16.2.0</version>
</dependency>
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.xwiki.platform

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Java application is affected by CVE-2025-32974, inspect your build dependencies using the Maven Dependency Plugin:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.xwiki.platform

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Xwiki platform security requiredrights default in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 15.10.8), your application is affected.

Note: The mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.xwiki.platform command inspects the resolved dependency graph declared in your project's POM files; it does not perform automated security scanning or inspect runtime dynamic classpaths. Always verify runtime container classpaths and shaded JARs.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-116: Improper Encoding or Escaping of Output, where the product prepares a structured message for communication with another component, but encoding or escaping of the data is either missing or done incorrectly. as a result, the intended structure of the message is not preserved. In Xwiki platform security requiredrights default, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact When editing a page, XWiki warns since version 15.9 when there is content on the page like a script macro that would gain more rights due to the editing. This analysis doesn't consider certain kinds of properties, allowing a user to put malicious scripts in there that will be executed after a user with script, admin, or programming rights edited the page. Such a malicious script could impact the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the whole XWiki installation. To reproduce, as a user without script right, create a class with a `TextArea` property, create page with an object of that class and a Velocity macro in its content. Then, as an admin, try editing that page. Normally, there should be a warning but in vulnerable versions of XWiki, there is no warning. ### Patches This vulnerability has been patched in XWiki 15.10.8 and 16.2.0. ### Workarounds We're not aware of any workarounds apart from not editing pages that might have been edited by untrusted users as a user with script rights, e.g., by using separate user accounts for admin and non-admin tasks.
