How to Fix CVE-2023-48299

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Torchserve dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

torchserve fixed: 0.9.0
pip install torchserve>=0.9.0
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

pip show torchserve

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2023-48299, inspect your installed packages using pip:

pip show torchserve

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Torchserve in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 0.9.0), your application is affected.

Note: The pip show torchserve command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-22: Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory ('Path Traversal'), where the product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. In Torchserve, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact Using the model/workflow management API, there is a chance of uploading potentially harmful archives that contain files that are extracted to any location on the filesystem that is within the process permissions. Leveraging this issue could aid third-party actors in hiding harmful code in open-source/public models, which can be downloaded from the internet, and take advantage of machines running Torchserve. ### Patches The ZipSlip issue in TorchServe has been fixed by validating the paths of files contained within a zip archive before extracting them: https://github.com/pytorch/serve/pull/2634 TorchServe release 0.9.0 includes fixes to address the ZipSlip vulnerability: https://github.com/pytorch/serve/releases/tag/v0.9.0 ### References https://github.com/pytorch/serve/pull/2634 https://github.com/pytorch/serve/releases/tag/v0.9.0 ### Credit We would like to thank Oligo Security for responsibly disclosing this issue.
