How to Fix CVE-2026-50196

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Steeltoe.Discovery.Eureka dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

Steeltoe.Discovery.Eureka fixed: 4.2.0
Upgrade Steeltoe.Discovery.Eureka to 4.2.0
Steeltoe.Discovery.Eureka fixed: 3.4.0
Upgrade Steeltoe.Discovery.Eureka to 3.4.0
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for Steeltoe.Discovery.Eureka

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2026-50196, inspect your project dependencies for Steeltoe.Discovery.Eureka:

inspect dependencies for Steeltoe.Discovery.Eureka

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Steeltoe.Discovery.Eureka in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 4.2.0), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-400: Uncontrolled Resource Consumption, where the product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource. In Steeltoe.Discovery.Eureka, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Summary `DataCenterInfo.FromJson` throws `ArgumentException` for any `name` value other than `"MyOwn"` or `"Amazon"`, despite the Java Eureka specification defining a third valid value: `"Netflix"`. The exception propagates through the entire registry deserialization chain and is swallowed by the periodic cache refresh task, leaving the local service registry permanently empty or stale. ### Impact Any registration with an unrecognized `DataCenterInfo.name` permanently disables service discovery for every Steeltoe Eureka client connected to the same registry. New clients start with an empty registry and running clients stop refreshing. The outage persists until the triggering registration is removed. Because `"Netflix"` is valid in the Java Eureka specification, a Java or Spring service in the same mesh can trigger this unintentionally. ### Affected configuration - Application uses the Steeltoe Eureka client (`EurekaDiscoveryClient`). - The registry contains at least one registration with a `DataCenterInfo.name` value other than `"MyOwn"` or `"Amazon"`. ### Mitigations If an immediate upgrade is not possible, remove any registrations using unsupported `DataCenterInfo.name` values from the registry. In mixed Java/Spring and Steeltoe environments, audit for the `Netflix` data center type before deploying Steeltoe Eureka clients.
