Integrity High (I:H)
Availability Low (A:L)

How to Fix CVE-2026-10732

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected decompress dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

decompress fixed: Latest secure release
npm install decompress@Latest secure release
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

npm ls decompress

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Node.js application is affected by CVE-2026-10732, inspect your project dependencies using npm:

npm ls decompress

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of decompress in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than the patched release), your application is affected.

Note: The npm ls decompress command inspects dependencies declared in your package.json and lockfile; it does not perform automated runtime dynamic scanning.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-29: Path Traversal: '\..\filename', where the product uses external input to construct a pathname that should be within a restricted directory, but it does not properly neutralize '\..\filename' (leading backslash dot dot) sequences that can resolve to a location that is outside of that directory. In decompress, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

All versions of the package decompress are vulnerable to Arbitrary File Write via Archive Extraction (Zip Slip) when extracting a ZIP archive containing two entries with the same path - the first being a symlink to an arbitrary target and the second being a regular file - the file content is written through the symlink to the target location outside the output directory. This is due to the microtask processing order that checks readlink for the second file before resolving symlink for the first file. An attacker can write arbitrary files on the host filesystem potentially leading to remote code execution by providing a specially crafted ZIP archive. **Note:** This bypasses all existing path traversal protections including preventWritingThroughSymlink, added as a part of the fix for [CVE-2020-12265](https://security.snyk.io/vuln/SNYK-JS-DECOMPRESS-557358).
