How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2022-24825, inspect your project dependencies for Github.com/stripe/smokescreen:

inspect dependencies for github.com/stripe/smokescreen

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Github.com/stripe/smokescreen in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 0.0.3), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-918: Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF), where the web server receives a url or similar request from an upstream component and retrieves the contents of this url, but it does not sufficiently ensure that the request is being sent to the expected destination. In Github.com/stripe/smokescreen, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

The primary use case for Smokescreen is to prevent server-side request forgery (SSRF) attacks in which external attackers leverage the behavior of applications to connect to or scan internal infrastructure. Smokescreen also offers an option to deny access to additional (e.g., external) URLs by way of a deny list. There was an issue in Smokescreen that made it possible to bypass the deny list feature by appending a dot to the end of user-supplied URLs, or by providing input in a different letter case. ### Recommendation Upgrade Smokescreen to version 0.0.3 or later. ### Acknowledgements Thanks to [Grzegorz Niedziela](https://twitter.com/gregxsunday) for reporting the issue. ### For more information Email us at security@stripe.com
