How to Fix GHSA-g2qj-pmxm-9f8f

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Symfony/security http dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

symfony/security-http fixed: 5.2.8
Upgrade symfony/security-http to 5.2.8
symfony/symfony fixed: 5.2.8
Upgrade symfony/symfony to 5.2.8
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for symfony/security-http

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by GHSA-g2qj-pmxm-9f8f, inspect your project dependencies for Symfony/security http:

inspect dependencies for symfony/security-http

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Symfony/security http in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 5.2.8), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-200: Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor, where the product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. In Symfony/security http, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

Description ----------- The ability to enumerate users was possible without relevant permissions due to different exception messages depending on whether the user existed or not. It was also possible to enumerate users by using a timing attack, by comparing time elapsed when authenticating an existing user and authenticating a non-existing user. Resolution ---------- We now ensure that 403s are returned whether the user exists or not if the password is invalid or if the user does not exist. The patch for this issue is available [here](https://github.com/symfony/symfony/commit/2a581d22cc621b33d5464ed65c4bc2057f72f011) for branch 3.4. Credits ------- I would like to thank James Isaac and Mathias Brodala for reporting the issue and Robin Chalas for fixing the issue.
