How to Fix CVE-2026-48496

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected opentelemetry-ebpf-profiler dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

go.opentelemetry.io/ebpf-profiler fixed: 0.0.202622
Upgrade go.opentelemetry.io/ebpf-profiler to 0.0.202622
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for go.opentelemetry.io/ebpf-profiler

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2026-48496, inspect your project dependencies for opentelemetry-ebpf-profiler:

inspect dependencies for go.opentelemetry.io/ebpf-profiler

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of opentelemetry-ebpf-profiler in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 0.0.202622), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-770: Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling, where the product allocates a reusable resource or group of resources on behalf of an actor without imposing any intended restrictions on the size or number of resources that can be allocated. In opentelemetry-ebpf-profiler, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Summary An unprivileged process can easily trigger the `processPIDEvents` goroutine to be blocked indefinitely, preventing the goroutine from analyzing any new ELF file. The goroutine stays blocked in the `openat2` syscall forever and the profiler can no longer work properly, it is a denial of service. ### Impact The impact is limited to denial-of-service on the ebpf-profiler agent: - There has to be a malicious workload albeit unprivileged. - No exfiltration of data. No loss of data. ### Fix Fixed in https://github.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-ebpf-profiler/commit/234b685cab31c2cb2f79e966caeab168bcc489e4. Fix is part of [v.0.0.202622](https://github.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-ebpf-profiler/releases/tag/v0.0.202622).
