How to Fix CVE-2024-53916

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Neutron dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

neutron fixed: 23.2.1
pip install neutron>=23.2.1
neutron fixed: 24.0.2
pip install neutron>=24.0.2
neutron fixed: 25.0.1
pip install neutron>=25.0.1
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

pip show neutron

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2024-53916, inspect your installed packages using pip:

pip show neutron

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Neutron in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 23.2.1), your application is affected.

Note: The pip show neutron command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-345: Insufficient Verification of Data Authenticity, where the product does not sufficiently verify the origin or authenticity of data, in a way that causes it to accept invalid data. In Neutron, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

In OpenStack Neutron before 25.0.1, neutron/extensions/tagging.py can use an incorrect ID during policy enforcement. It does not apply the proper policy check for changing network tags. An unprivileged tenant is able to change (add and clear) tags on network objects that do not belong to the tenant, and this action is not subjected to the proper policy authorization check. This affects 23 before 23.2.1, 24 before 24.0.2, and 25 before 25.0.1.
