How to Fix CVE-2022-2390

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Play services basement dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

com.google.android.gms:play-services-basement fixed: 18.0.2
<dependency>
    <groupId>com.google.android.gms</groupId>
    <artifactId>play-services-basement</artifactId>
    <version>18.0.2</version>
</dependency>
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=com.google.android.gms

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Java application is affected by CVE-2022-2390, inspect your build dependencies using the Maven Dependency Plugin:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=com.google.android.gms

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Play services basement in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 18.0.2), your application is affected.

Note: The mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=com.google.android.gms command inspects the resolved dependency graph declared in your project's POM files; it does not perform automated security scanning or inspect runtime dynamic classpaths. Always verify runtime container classpaths and shaded JARs.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-471: Modification of Assumed-Immutable Data (MAID), where the product does not properly protect an assumed-immutable element from being modified by an attacker. In Play services basement, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

Apps developed with Google Play Services SDK incorrectly had the mutability flag set to PendingIntents that were passed to the Notification service. As Google Play services SDK is so widely used, this bug affects many applications. For an application affected, this bug will let the attacker, gain the access to all non-exported providers and/or gain the access to other providers the victim has permissions. We recommend upgrading to version 18.0.2 of the Play Service SDK as well as rebuilding and redeploying apps.
