How to Fix CVE-2025-30157

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Github.com/envoyproxy/envoy dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

github.com/envoyproxy/envoy fixed: 1.30.10
Upgrade github.com/envoyproxy/envoy to 1.30.10
github.com/envoyproxy/envoy fixed: 1.31.6
Upgrade github.com/envoyproxy/envoy to 1.31.6
github.com/envoyproxy/envoy fixed: 1.32.4
Upgrade github.com/envoyproxy/envoy to 1.32.4
github.com/envoyproxy/envoy fixed: 1.33.1
Upgrade github.com/envoyproxy/envoy to 1.33.1
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for github.com/envoyproxy/envoy

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2025-30157, inspect your project dependencies for Github.com/envoyproxy/envoy:

inspect dependencies for github.com/envoyproxy/envoy

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Github.com/envoyproxy/envoy in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 1.30.10), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-460: Improper Cleanup on Thrown Exception, where the product does not clean up its state or incorrectly cleans up its state when an exception is thrown, leading to unexpected state or control flow. In Github.com/envoyproxy/envoy, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Summary Envoy's ext_proc HTTP filter is at risk of crashing if a local reply is sent to the external server due to the filter's life time issue. A known situation is the fail of a websocket handshake will trigger a local reply leading to the crash of Envoy. ### PoC If both websocket and ext_proc are enabled, a failed handshake will trigger a local reply, thus ext_proc will crash. ### Mitigation 1. Disable websocket traffic 2. Change the websocket response from backend to always return `101 Switch protocol` based on RFC. 3. Apply the patch and the ext_proc filter will not send the local reply that is generated by Envoy to the ext_proc server for processing. 4. Apply the patch that the router will cancel the upstream requests when sending a local reply. ### Impact Denial of service ### Reporter Vasilios Syrakis Fernando Cainelli
