How to Fix GHSA-9wg9-93h9-j8ch

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Auth0/symfony dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

auth0/symfony fixed: 5.4.0
Upgrade auth0/symfony to 5.4.0
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for auth0/symfony

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by GHSA-9wg9-93h9-j8ch, inspect your project dependencies for Auth0/symfony:

inspect dependencies for auth0/symfony

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Auth0/symfony in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 5.4.0), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-287: Improper Authentication, where when an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. In Auth0/symfony, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

**Overview** Session cookies of applications using the Auth0 symfony SDK configured with CookieStore have authentication tags that can be brute forced, which may result in unauthorized access. **Am I Affected?** You are affected by this vulnerability if you meet the following pre-conditions: 1. Applications using the Auth0 symfony SDK with version <=5.3.1 2. Auth0/Symfony SDK uses the Auth0-PHP SDK with version 8.0.0-BETA1 or higher and below 8.14.0. 3. Session storage configured with CookieStore. **Fix** Upgrade Auth0/symfony to v5.4.0. As an additional precautionary measure, we recommend rotating your cookie encryption keys. Note that once updated, any previous session cookies will be rejected. **Acknowledgement** Okta would like to thank Félix Charette for discovering this vulnerability.
