inspect dependencies for github.com/chainguard-dev/malcontent

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Github.com/chainguard dev/malcontent in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 1.20.3), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-522: Insufficiently Protected Credentials, where the product transmits or stores authentication credentials, but it uses an insecure method that is susceptible to unauthorized interception and/or retrieval. In Github.com/chainguard dev/malcontent, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

Malcontent could be made to expose Docker registry credentials if it scanned a specially crafted OCI image reference. Malcontent uses [google/go-containerregistry](https://github.com/google/go-containerregistry) for OCI image pulls, which by default uses the Docker credential keychain. A malicious registry could return a `WWW-Authenticate` header redirecting token authentication to an attacker-controlled endpoint, causing credentials to be sent to that endpoint. **Fix:** [Default to anonymous auth for OCI pulls](https://github.com/chainguard-dev/malcontent/commit/538ed00cdc639d687a4bd1e843a2be0428a3b3e7) **Acknowledgements** Thank you to Oleh Konko from [1seal](https://1seal.org/) for discovering and reporting this issue.
