How to Fix CVE-2025-32032

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Apollo router dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

apollo-router fixed: 1.61.2
Upgrade apollo-router to 1.61.2
apollo-router fixed: 2.1.1
Upgrade apollo-router to 2.1.1
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for apollo-router

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2025-32032, inspect your project dependencies for Apollo router:

inspect dependencies for apollo-router

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Apollo router in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 1.61.2), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-770: Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling, where the product allocates a reusable resource or group of resources on behalf of an actor without imposing any intended restrictions on the size or number of resources that can be allocated. In Apollo router, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

# Impact ## Summary A vulnerability in Apollo Router allowed queries with deeply nested and reused named fragments to be prohibitively expensive to query plan, specifically due to internal optimizations being frequently bypassed. This could lead to excessive resource consumption and denial of service. ## Details The query planner includes an optimization that significantly speeds up planning for applicable GraphQL selections. However, queries with deeply nested and reused named fragments can generate many selections where this optimization does not apply, leading to significantly longer planning times. Because the query planner does not enforce a timeout, a small number of such queries can exhaust router's thread pool, rendering it inoperable. ## Fix/Mitigation - A new **Query Optimization Limit** metric has been added: - This metric approximates the number of selections that cannot be skipped by the existing optimization. - The metric is checked against a limit to prevent excessive computation. Given the complexity of query planning optimizations, we will continue refining these solutions based on real-world performance and accuracy tests. # Patches This has been remediated in `apollo-router` versions 1.61.2 and 2.1.1. # Workarounds The only known workaround is "Safelisting" or "Safelisting with IDs only" per [Safelisting with Persisted Queries - Apollo GraphQL Docs](https://www.apollographql.com/docs/graphos/routing/security/persisted-queries#router-security-levels). # References [Query Planning Documentation](https://www.apollographql.com/docs/graphos/reference/federation/query-plans) ## Acknowledgements We appreciate the efforts of the security community in identifying and improving the performance and security of query planning mechanisms.
