How to Fix CVE-2024-58261

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Sequoia openpgp dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

sequoia-openpgp fixed: 1.21.0
Upgrade sequoia-openpgp to 1.21.0
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for sequoia-openpgp

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2024-58261, inspect your project dependencies for Sequoia openpgp:

inspect dependencies for sequoia-openpgp

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Sequoia openpgp in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 1.21.0), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-835: Loop with Unreachable Exit Condition ('Infinite Loop'), where the product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. In Sequoia openpgp, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

There is a denial-of-service vulnerability in sequoia-openpgp, our crate providing a low-level interface to our OpenPGP implementation. When triggered, the process will enter an infinite loop. Many thanks to Andrew Gallagher for disclosing the issue to us. ## Impact Any software directly or indirectly using the interface `sequoia_openpgp::cert::raw::RawCertParser`. Notably, this includes all software using the `sequoia_cert_store` crate. ## Details The `RawCertParser` does not advance the input stream when encountering unsupported cert (primary key) versions, resulting in an infinite loop. The fix introduces a new raw-cert-specific `cert::raw::Error::UnuspportedCert`. ## Affected software - sequoia-openpgp 1.13.0 - sequoia-openpgp 1.14.0 - sequoia-openpgp 1.15.0 - sequoia-openpgp 1.16.0 - sequoia-openpgp 1.17.0 - sequoia-openpgp 1.18.0 - sequoia-openpgp 1.19.0 - sequoia-openpgp 1.20.0 - Any software built against a vulnerable version of sequoia-openpgp which is directly or indirectly using the interface sequoia_`openpgp::cert::raw::RawCertParser`. Notably, this includes all software using the `sequoia_cert_store` crate.
