How to Fix CVE-2016-1000236

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Cookie signature dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

cookie-signature fixed: 1.0.4
npm install cookie-signature@1.0.4
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

npm ls cookie-signature

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Node.js application is affected by CVE-2016-1000236, inspect your project dependencies using npm:

npm ls cookie-signature

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Cookie signature in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 1.0.4), your application is affected.

Note: The npm ls cookie-signature command inspects dependencies declared in your package.json and lockfile; it does not perform automated runtime dynamic scanning.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-362: Concurrent Execution using Shared Resource with Improper Synchronization ('Race Condition'), where the product contains a concurrent code sequence that requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence operating concurrently. In Cookie signature, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

Affected versions of `cookie-signature` are vulnerable to timing attacks as a result of using a fail-early comparison instead of a constant-time comparison. Timing attacks remove the exponential increase in entropy gained from increased secret length, by providing per-character feedback on the correctness of a guess via miniscule timing differences. Under favorable network conditions, an attacker can exploit this to guess the secret in no more than `charset*length` guesses, instead of `charset^length` guesses required were the timing attack not present. ## Recommendation Update to 1.0.4 or later.
