How to Fix CVE-2016-8741

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Qpid broker dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

org.apache.qpid:qpid-broker fixed: 6.0.6
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.apache.qpid</groupId>
    <artifactId>qpid-broker</artifactId>
    <version>6.0.6</version>
</dependency>
org.apache.qpid:qpid-broker fixed: 6.1.1
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.apache.qpid</groupId>
    <artifactId>qpid-broker</artifactId>
    <version>6.1.1</version>
</dependency>
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.apache.qpid

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Java application is affected by CVE-2016-8741, inspect your build dependencies using the Maven Dependency Plugin:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.apache.qpid

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Qpid broker in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 6.0.6), your application is affected.

Note: The mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.apache.qpid command inspects the resolved dependency graph declared in your project's POM files; it does not perform automated security scanning or inspect runtime dynamic classpaths. Always verify runtime container classpaths and shaded JARs.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-200: Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor, where the product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. In Qpid broker, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

The Apache Qpid Broker for Java can be configured to use different so called AuthenticationProviders to handle user authentication. Among the choices are the SCRAM-SHA-1 and SCRAM-SHA-256 AuthenticationProvider types. It was discovered that these AuthenticationProviders in Apache Qpid Broker for Java 6.0.x before 6.0.6 and 6.1.x before 6.1.1 prematurely terminate the SCRAM SASL negotiation if the provided user name does not exist thus allowing remote attacker to determine the existence of user accounts. The Vulnerability does not apply to AuthenticationProviders other than SCRAM-SHA-1 and SCRAM-SHA-256.
