How to Fix CVE-2018-14636

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Neutron dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

neutron fixed: 13.0.0.0b2
pip install neutron>=13.0.0.0b2
neutron fixed: 12.0.3
pip install neutron>=12.0.3
neutron fixed: 11.0.5
pip install neutron>=11.0.5
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

pip show neutron

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2018-14636, inspect your installed packages using pip:

pip show neutron

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Neutron in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 13.0.0.0b2), your application is affected.

Note: The pip show neutron command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under General Security Weakness. In Neutron, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

Live-migrated instances are briefly able to inspect traffic for other instances on the same hypervisor. This brief window could be extended indefinitely if the instance's port is set administratively down prior to live-migration and kept down after the migration is complete. This is possible due to the Open vSwitch integration bridge being connected to the instance during migration. When connected to the integration bridge, all traffic for instances using the same Open vSwitch instance would potentially be visible to the migrated guest, as the required Open vSwitch VLAN filters are only applied post-migration. Versions of openstack-neutron before 13.0.0.0b2, 12.0.3, 11.0.5 are vulnerable.
