How to Fix CVE-2022-30947

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Git dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

org.jenkins-ci.plugins:git fixed: 4.11.2
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.jenkins-ci.plugins</groupId>
    <artifactId>git</artifactId>
    <version>4.11.2</version>
</dependency>
org.jenkins-ci.plugins:mercurial fixed: 2.16.1
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.jenkins-ci.plugins</groupId>
    <artifactId>mercurial</artifactId>
    <version>2.16.1</version>
</dependency>
org.jenkins-ci.plugins:repo fixed: 1.15.0
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.jenkins-ci.plugins</groupId>
    <artifactId>repo</artifactId>
    <version>1.15.0</version>
</dependency>
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.jenkins-ci.plugins

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Java application is affected by CVE-2022-30947, inspect your build dependencies using the Maven Dependency Plugin:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.jenkins-ci.plugins

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Git in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 4.11.2), your application is affected.

Note: The mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.jenkins-ci.plugins command inspects the resolved dependency graph declared in your project's POM files; it does not perform automated security scanning or inspect runtime dynamic classpaths. Always verify runtime container classpaths and shaded JARs.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-22: Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory ('Path Traversal'), where the product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. In Git, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

Jenkins SCMs support a number of different URL schemes, including local file system paths (e.g. using `file:` URLs). Historically in Jenkins, only agents checked out from SCM, and if multiple projects share the same agent, there is no expected isolation between builds besides using different workspaces unless overridden. Some Pipeline-related features check out SCMs from the Jenkins controller as well. This allows attackers able to configure pipelines to check out some SCM repositories stored on the Jenkins controller’s file system using local paths as SCM URLs, obtaining limited information about other projects' SCM contents.
