How to Fix CVE-2023-22466

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Tokio dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

tokio fixed: 1.18.4
Upgrade tokio to 1.18.4
tokio fixed: 1.20.3
Upgrade tokio to 1.20.3
tokio fixed: 1.23.1
Upgrade tokio to 1.23.1
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for tokio

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2023-22466, inspect your project dependencies for Tokio:

inspect dependencies for tokio

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Tokio in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 1.18.4), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-665: Improper Initialization, where the product does not initialize or incorrectly initializes a resource, which might leave the resource in an unexpected state when it is accessed or used. In Tokio, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact When configuring a Windows named pipe server, setting `pipe_mode` will reset `reject_remote_clients` to `false`. If the application has previously configured `reject_remote_clients` to `true`, this effectively undoes the configuration. This also applies if `reject_remote_clients` is not explicitly set as this is the default configuration and is cleared by calling `pipe_mode`. Remote clients may only access the named pipe if the named pipe's associated path is accessible via a publically shared folder (SMB). ### Patches The following versions have been patched: * 1.23.1 * 1.20.3 * 1.18.4 The fix will also be present in all releases starting from version 1.24.0. Named pipes were introduced to Tokio in version 1.7.0, so releases older than 1.7.0 are not affected. ### Workarounds Ensure that `pipe_mode` is set **first** after initializing a `ServerOptions`. For example: ```rust let mut opts = ServerOptions::new(); opts.pipe_mode(PipeMode::Message); opts.reject_remote_clients(true); ``` ### References https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/api/winbase/nf-winbase-createnamedpipea#pipe_reject_remote_clients
