How to Fix GHSA-7hmv-4j2j-pp6f

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected PocketMine-MP dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

pocketmine/pocketmine-mp fixed: 5.39.2
Upgrade pocketmine/pocketmine-mp to 5.39.2
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for pocketmine/pocketmine-mp

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by GHSA-7hmv-4j2j-pp6f, inspect your project dependencies for PocketMine-MP:

inspect dependencies for pocketmine/pocketmine-mp

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of PocketMine-MP in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 5.39.2), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-406: Insufficient Control of Network Message Volume (Network Amplification), where the product does not sufficiently monitor or control transmitted network traffic volume, so that an actor can cause the product to transmit more traffic than should be allowed for that actor. In PocketMine-MP, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact The server handles `ActorEventPacket` to trigger consuming animations from vanilla clients when they eat food or drink potions. This can be abused to make the server spam other clients, and to waste server CPU and memory. For every `ActorEventPacket` sent by the client, an animation event will be sent to every other player the attacker is visible to. This is similar to various other vulnerabilities which were fixed in the network overhaul of PM4 (e.g. `AnimatePacket` and `LevelSoundEventPacket`), but somehow this one slipped through the net. ### Patches The problem was addressed in aeea1150a772a005b92bd418366f1b7cf1a91ab5 by changing the mechanism for consuming animations to be fully controlled by the server. `ActorEventPacket` from the client is now discarded. ### Workarounds A plugin could use `DataPacketDecodeEvent` to rate-limit `ActorEventPacket` to prevent the attack.
