How to Fix CVE-2022-31080

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge fixed: 1.11.1
Upgrade github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge to 1.11.1
github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge fixed: 1.10.2
Upgrade github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge to 1.10.2
github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge fixed: 1.9.4
Upgrade github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge to 1.9.4
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2022-31080, inspect your project dependencies for Github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge:

inspect dependencies for github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 1.11.1), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-400: Uncontrolled Resource Consumption, where the product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource. In Github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact A large response received by the viaduct WSClient can cause a DoS from memory exhaustion. The entire body of the response is being read into memory which could allow an attacker to send a request that returns a response with a large body. The consequence of the exhaustion is that the process which invokes a WSClient will be in a denial of service. It will be affected If users which are authenticated to the edge side and connect from the edge side to `cloudhub` through WebSocket protocol. ### Patches This bug has been fixed in Kubeedge 1.11.1, 1.10.2, 1.9.4. Users should update to these versions to resolve the issue. ### Workarounds At the time of writing, no workaround exists. ### References NA ### Credits Thanks David Korczynski and Adam Korczynski of ADA Logics for responsibly disclosing this issue in accordance with the [kubeedge security policy](https://github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge/security/policy) during a security audit sponsored by CNCF and facilitated by OSTIF. ### For more information If you have any questions or comments about this advisory: * Open an issue in [KubeEdge repo](https://github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge/issues/new/choose) * To make a vulnerability report, email your vulnerability to the private [cncf-kubeedge-security@lists.cncf.io](mailto:cncf-kubeedge-security@lists.cncf.io) list with the security details and the details expected for [KubeEdge bug reports](https://github.com/kubeedge/kubeedge/blob/master/.github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/bug-report.md).
