How to Fix CVE-2020-12690

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Keystone dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

keystone fixed: 15.0.1
pip install keystone>=15.0.1
keystone fixed: 16.0.0
pip install keystone>=16.0.0
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

pip show keystone

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2020-12690, inspect your installed packages using pip:

pip show keystone

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Keystone in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 15.0.1), your application is affected.

Note: The pip show keystone command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-613: Insufficient Session Expiration, where according to wasc, "insufficient session expiration is when a web site permits an attacker to reuse old session credentials or session ids for authorization.". In Keystone, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

An issue was discovered in OpenStack Keystone before 15.0.1, and 16.0.0. The list of roles provided for an OAuth1 access token is silently ignored. Thus, when an access token is used to request a keystone token, the keystone token contains every role assignment the creator had for the project. This results in the provided keystone token having more role assignments than the creator intended, possibly giving unintended escalated access.
