How to Fix GHSA-67cx-rhhq-mfhq

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Indico dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

indico fixed: 2.1.10
pip install indico>=2.1.10
indico fixed: 2.2.3
pip install indico>=2.2.3
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

pip show indico

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Python environment is affected by GHSA-67cx-rhhq-mfhq, inspect your installed packages using pip:

pip show indico

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Indico in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 2.1.10), your application is affected.

Note: The pip show indico command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-77: Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in a Command ('Command Injection'), where the product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. In Indico, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

## Local file disclosure through LaTeX injection ### Impact An external audit of the Indico codebase has discovered a vulnerability in Indico's LaTeX sanitization code, which could have malicious users to run unsafe LaTeX commands on the server. Such commands allowed for example to read local files (e.g. `indico.conf`). As far as we know it is not possible to write files or execute code using this vulnerability. ### Patches You need to update to [Indico 2.2.3](https://github.com/indico/indico/releases/tag/v2.2.3) as soon as possible. We also released [Indico 2.1.10](https://github.com/indico/indico/releases/tag/v2.1.10) in case you cannot update to 2.2 for some reason. See https://docs.getindico.io/en/stable/installation/upgrade/ for instructions on how to update. ### Workarounds Setting `XELATEX_PATH = None` in `indico.conf` will result in an error when building a PDF, but without being able to run xelatex, the vulnerability cannot be abused. ### For more information If you have any questions or comments about this advisory: * Open a thread in [our forum](https://talk.getindico.io/) * Email us privately at [indico-team@cern.ch](mailto:indico-team@cern.ch)
