How to Fix CVE-2023-43795

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Gs wps core dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

org.geoserver.extension:gs-wps-core fixed: 2.22.5
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.geoserver.extension</groupId>
    <artifactId>gs-wps-core</artifactId>
    <version>2.22.5</version>
</dependency>
org.geoserver.extension:gs-wps-core fixed: 2.23.2
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.geoserver.extension</groupId>
    <artifactId>gs-wps-core</artifactId>
    <version>2.23.2</version>
</dependency>
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.geoserver.extension

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Java application is affected by CVE-2023-43795, inspect your build dependencies using the Maven Dependency Plugin:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.geoserver.extension

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Gs wps core in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 2.22.5), your application is affected.

Note: The mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.geoserver.extension command inspects the resolved dependency graph declared in your project's POM files; it does not perform automated security scanning or inspect runtime dynamic classpaths. Always verify runtime container classpaths and shaded JARs.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-918: Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF), where the web server receives a url or similar request from an upstream component and retrieves the contents of this url, but it does not sufficiently ensure that the request is being sent to the expected destination. In Gs wps core, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Summary The OGC Web Processing Service (WPS) specification is designed to process information from any server using GET and POST requests. This presents the opportunity for Server Side Request Forgery. ## Details This vulnerability requires: * The WPS extension to be installed * The WPS security setting "Disable complex inputs" to be unselected * Security URL checks to be disabled ### Impact This vulnerability presents the opportunity for Server Side Request Forgery. ### Mitigation The ability to reference an external URL location is defined by the WPS standard Execute operation. This operations is defined by an Industry and International standard and cannot be redefined by the GeoServer application in isolation. To disable complex remote inputs on GeoServer 2.20.5 and GeoServer 2.21.0: 1. Navigate to **Security > WPS Security** page 2. Locate **Complex Inputs** heading 3. Select the check box for **Disable loading complex inputs from remote references** ### Resolution To allow processing of complex inputs safely in GeoServer 2.22.5 and GeoServer 2.23.2: 1. Navigate to **Security > URL Checks** 2. Enable **URL Checks** are enabled setting 3. Check the user manual for [examples](https://docs.geoserver.org/latest/en/user/security/urlchecks.html#example-regex-patterns) of how to trust specific locations for your external services. Processing of complex inputs safely is on by default in GeoServer 2.24.0. ### References * [Complex Inputs](https://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/user/services/wps/security.html#complex-inputs) * [URL Checks](https://docs.geoserver.org/latest/en/user/security/urlchecks.html)
