How to Fix CVE-2026-64825

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Homeassistant dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

homeassistant fixed: 2026.6.0
pip install homeassistant>=2026.6.0
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

pip show homeassistant

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2026-64825, inspect your installed packages using pip:

pip show homeassistant

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Homeassistant in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 2026.6.0), your application is affected.

Note: The pip show homeassistant command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-22: Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory ('Path Traversal'), where the product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. In Homeassistant, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

Home Assistant Core before 2026.6.0 contains a path traversal vulnerability that allows unauthenticated attackers to write arbitrary files to any directory on the host filesystem by uploading a crafted backup archive during the initial onboarding window. Attackers can manipulate the 'name' field inside the uploaded archive's backup.json to supply an absolute path, causing pathlib.Path.__truediv__ to discard the configured backup directory prefix and write attacker-controlled content to arbitrary locations, with full filesystem access when the process runs as root.
