How to Fix CVE-2018-1002105

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes fixed: 1.10.11
Upgrade github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes to 1.10.11
github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes fixed: 1.11.5
Upgrade github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes to 1.11.5
github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes fixed: 1.12.3
Upgrade github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes to 1.12.3
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2018-1002105, inspect your project dependencies for Github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes:

inspect dependencies for github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 1.10.11), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-269: Improper Privilege Management, where the product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. In Github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

In all Kubernetes versions prior to v1.10.11, v1.11.5, and v1.12.3, incorrect handling of error responses to proxied upgrade requests in the kube-apiserver allowed specially crafted requests to establish a connection through the Kubernetes API server to backend servers, then send arbitrary requests over the same connection directly to the backend, authenticated with the Kubernetes API server's TLS credentials used to establish the backend connection.
