How to Fix CVE-2022-24761

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Waitress dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

waitress fixed: 2.1.1
pip install waitress>=2.1.1
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

pip show waitress

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2022-24761, inspect your installed packages using pip:

pip show waitress

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Waitress in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 2.1.1), your application is affected.

Note: The pip show waitress command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-444: Inconsistent Interpretation of HTTP Requests ('HTTP Request/Response Smuggling'), where the product acts as an intermediary http agent (such as a proxy or firewall) in the data flow between two entities such as a client and server, but it does not interpret malformed http requests or responses in ways that are consistent with how the messages will be processed by those entities that are at the ultimate destination. In Waitress, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact When using Waitress behind a proxy that does not properly validate the incoming HTTP request matches the RFC7230 standard, Waitress and the frontend proxy may disagree on where one request starts and where it ends. This would allow requests to be smuggled via the front-end proxy to waitress and later behavior. There are two classes of vulnerability that may lead to request smuggling that are addressed by this advisory: - The use of Python's `int()` to parse strings into integers, leading to `+10` to be parsed as `10`, or `0x01` to be parsed as `1`, where as the standard specifies that the string should contain only digits or hex digits. - Waitress does not support chunk extensions, however it was discarding them without validating that they did not contain illegal characters ### Patches This has been fixed in Waitress 2.1.1 ### Workarounds When deploying a proxy in front of waitress, turning on any and all functionality to make sure that the request matches the RFC7230 standard. Certain proxy servers may not have this functionality though and users are encouraged to upgrade to the latest version of waitress instead. ### References - https://portswigger.net/research/http-desync-attacks-request-smuggling-reborn ### For more information If you have any questions or comments about this advisory: * Open an issue in [the Github issue tracker](https://github.com/Pylons/waitress/issues) (if not security related/sensitive) * Email us at [pylons-project-security@googlegroups.com](mailto:pylons-project-security@googlegroups.com) (If security related or sensitive)
