How to Fix CVE-2026-41161

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected @sync in/server dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

@sync-in/server fixed: 2.2.0
npm install @sync-in/server@2.2.0
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

npm ls @sync-in/server

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Node.js application is affected by CVE-2026-41161, inspect your project dependencies using npm:

npm ls @sync-in/server

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of @sync in/server in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 2.2.0), your application is affected.

Note: The npm ls @sync-in/server command inspects dependencies declared in your package.json and lockfile; it does not perform automated runtime dynamic scanning.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-208: Observable Timing Discrepancy, where two separate operations in a product require different amounts of time to complete, in a way that is observable to an actor and reveals security-relevant information about the state of the product, such as whether a particular operation was successful or not. In @sync in/server, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Summary The `/api/auth/login` endpoint contains a logic flaw that allows unauthenticated remote attackers to enumerate valid usernames by measuring the application's response time. ### Details The logic flaw can be located at the below point in source: https://github.com/Sync-in/server/blob/7868bb2b3025f92e6c38087456304758713971b2/backend/src/applications/users/services/users-queries.service.ts#L91-L95 Endpoints used for authentication should respond to the user with a consistent cadence, preventing remote actors from deriving sensitive information about an application based on backend behavior. In the case of authentication endpoints, this timing discrepancy is often caused by short-circuiting due to the lack of a matched user to compare against - as is the case with Sync-in. ### Validation TickTock Enum (Burp Suite Extension) was utilized to validate this finding. Authentication attempts with a valid username see a response from the application at around 350-400ms on average, while invalid usernames are returned at only 95-100ms on average. <img width="1302" height="284" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/31eeb72a-c3c2-4057-ac69-c0c92f0bbd4e" /> ### Impact An unauthenticated remote attacker can enumerate valid usernames. This significantly weakens the application's security posture by facilitating targeted brute-force attacks, stuffing, social engineering, and a suite of other more targeted attacks.
