How to Fix CVE-2022-24857

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Django mfa3 dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

django-mfa3 fixed: 0.5.0
pip install django-mfa3>=0.5.0
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

pip show django-mfa3

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2022-24857, inspect your installed packages using pip:

pip show django-mfa3

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Django mfa3 in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 0.5.0), your application is affected.

Note: The pip show django-mfa3 command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-287: Improper Authentication, where when an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. In Django mfa3, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact django-mfa3 is a library that implements multi factor authentication for the django web framework. It achieves this by modifying the regular login view. Django however has a second login view for its admin area. This second login view was not modified, so the multi factor authentication can be bypassed. You are affected if you have activated both django-mfa3 (< 0.5.0) and django.contrib.admin and have not taken any other measures to prevent users from accessing the admin login view. ### Patches The issue has been fixed in django-mfa3 0.5.0. ### Workarounds It is possible to work around the issue by overwriting the admin login route, e.g. by adding the following URL definition *before* the admin routes: url('admin/login/', lambda request: redirect(settings.LOGIN_URL) ### References - [django-mfa3 changelog](https://github.com/xi/django-mfa3/blob/main/CHANGES.md#050-2022-04-15)
