How to Fix CVE-2024-2965

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Langchain community dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

langchain-community fixed: 0.2.5
pip install langchain-community>=0.2.5
langchain fixed: 0.2.5
pip install langchain>=0.2.5
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

pip show langchain-community

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Python environment is affected by CVE-2024-2965, inspect your installed packages using pip:

pip show langchain-community

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Langchain community in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 0.2.5), your application is affected.

Note: The pip show langchain-community command checks currently installed packages in your active Python environment.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-400: Uncontrolled Resource Consumption, where the product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource. In Langchain community, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

Denial of service in `SitemapLoader` Document Loader in the `langchain-community` package, affecting versions below 0.2.5. The `parse_sitemap` method, responsible for parsing sitemaps and extracting URLs, lacks a mechanism to prevent infinite recursion when a sitemap URL refers to the current sitemap itself. This oversight allows for the possibility of an infinite loop, leading to a crash by exceeding the maximum recursion depth in Python. This vulnerability can be exploited to occupy server socket/port resources and crash the Python process, impacting the availability of services relying on this functionality.
