How to Fix CVE-2020-36203

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Reffers dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

reffers fixed: 0.6.1
Upgrade reffers to 0.6.1
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for reffers

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2020-36203, inspect your project dependencies for Reffers:

inspect dependencies for reffers

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Reffers in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 0.6.1), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-362: Concurrent Execution using Shared Resource with Improper Synchronization ('Race Condition'), where the product contains a concurrent code sequence that requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence operating concurrently. In Reffers, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

ARefss<'a, V> is a type that is assumed to contain objects that are Send + Sync. In the affected versions of this crate, Send/Sync traits are unconditionally implemented for ARefss<'a, V>. By using the ARefss::map() API, we can insert a !Send or !Sync object into ARefss<'a, V>. After that, it is possible to create a data race to the inner object of ARefss<'a, V>, which can lead to undefined behavior & memory corruption. The flaw was corrected in commit `6dd7ca0` by adding trait bound V: Send + Sync to ARefss::map() API.
