How to Fix CVE-2024-33851

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Paragonie/ecc dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

paragonie/ecc fixed: 2.0.1
Upgrade paragonie/ecc to 2.0.1
mdanter/ecc fixed: Latest secure release
Upgrade mdanter/ecc to Latest secure release
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for paragonie/ecc

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2024-33851, inspect your project dependencies for Paragonie/ecc:

inspect dependencies for paragonie/ecc

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Paragonie/ecc in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 2.0.1), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under General Security Weakness. In Paragonie/ecc, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

phpecc, as used in **all versions** of mdanter/ecc, as well as paragonie/ecc before 2.0.1, has a branch-based timing leak in Point addition. (This Composer package is also known as phpecc/phpecc on GitHub, previously known as the Matyas Danter ECC library.) Paragon Initiative Enterprises [hard-forked phpecc/phpecc](https://github.com/phpecc/phpecc/issues/289) and discovered the issue in the original code, then released v2.0.1 which fixes the vulnerability. [The upstream code](https://github.com/phpecc/phpecc) is no longer maintained and remains vulnerable for all versions.
