How to Fix CVE-2022-23471

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Github.com/containerd/containerd dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

github.com/containerd/containerd fixed: 1.5.16
Upgrade github.com/containerd/containerd to 1.5.16
github.com/containerd/containerd fixed: 1.6.12
Upgrade github.com/containerd/containerd to 1.6.12
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

inspect dependencies for github.com/containerd/containerd

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your application is affected by CVE-2022-23471, inspect your project dependencies for Github.com/containerd/containerd:

inspect dependencies for github.com/containerd/containerd

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Github.com/containerd/containerd in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 1.5.16), your application is affected.

Note: Verify declared build manifests and deployed runtime container environments.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-400: Uncontrolled Resource Consumption, where the product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource. In Github.com/containerd/containerd, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

### Impact A bug was found in containerd's CRI implementation where a user can exhaust memory on the host. In the CRI stream server, a goroutine is launched to handle terminal resize events if a TTY is requested. If the user's process fails to launch due to, for example, a faulty command, the goroutine will be stuck waiting to send without a receiver, resulting in a memory leak. Kubernetes and crictl can both be configured to use containerd's CRI implementation and the stream server is used for handling container IO. ### Patches This bug has been fixed in containerd 1.6.12 and 1.5.16. Users should update to these versions to resolve the issue. ### Workarounds Ensure that only trusted images and commands are used and that only trusted users have permissions to execute commands in running containers. ### For more information If you have any questions or comments about this advisory: * Open an issue in [containerd](https://github.com/containerd/containerd/issues/new/choose) * Email us at [security@containerd.io](mailto:security@containerd.io) To report a security issue in containerd: * [Report a new vulnerability](https://github.com/containerd/containerd/security/advisories/new) * Email us at [security@containerd.io](mailto:security@containerd.io)
