How to Fix CVE-2023-0871

To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade all affected Org.opennms.core.xml dependencies to a patched release. Both direct and transitive dependencies should be checked, as frameworks or security libraries may pull in vulnerable versions transitively.

org.opennms.core:org.opennms.core.xml fixed: 32.0.2
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.opennms.core</groupId>
    <artifactId>org.opennms.core.xml</artifactId>
    <version>32.0.2</version>
</dependency>
Verify Direct and Transitive Dependencies

Run the following command in your project directory to verify that all resolved dependencies use the patched release:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.opennms.core

How to Check if You Are Affected

To determine whether your Java application is affected by CVE-2023-0871, inspect your build dependencies using the Maven Dependency Plugin:

mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.opennms.core

Analyze the terminal output to locate any version of Org.opennms.core.xml in your dependency tree. If any resolved version matches the vulnerable ranges listed in the table below (for example, versions earlier than 32.0.2), your application is affected.

Note: The mvn dependency:tree -Dincludes=org.opennms.core command inspects the resolved dependency graph declared in your project's POM files; it does not perform automated security scanning or inspect runtime dynamic classpaths. Always verify runtime container classpaths and shaded JARs.

Technical Details

Vulnerability Mechanism & Technical Analysis

This vulnerability is classified under CWE-611: Improper Restriction of XML External Entity Reference, where the product processes an xml document that can contain xml entities with uris that resolve to documents outside of the intended sphere of control, causing the product to embed incorrect documents into its output. In Org.opennms.core.xml, software state validation or input boundaries are circumvented during processing. Review the official source advisory statement below for specific affected components, classes, and reproduction details.

Source Advisory Statement

XXE injection in `/rtc/post/ endpoint` in OpenNMS Horizon 31.0.8 and versions earlier than 32.0.2 on multiple platforms is vulnerable to XML external entity (XXE) injection, which can be used for instance to force Horizon to make arbitrary HTTP requests to internal and external services. The solution is to upgrade to Meridian 2023.1.6, 2022.1.19, 2021.1.30, 2020.1.38 or Horizon 32.0.2 or newer. Meridian and Horizon installation instructions state that they are intended for installation within an organization's private networks and should not be directly accessible from the Internet.
